Wythe Studios Architects is an architecture and design studio established by architect Jeni Erbes-Chan based in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to establishing her studio in 2010, Jeni Erbes-Chan was an architect at Tod Williams Billie Tsien in New York, José Antonio Martínez Lapeña and Elías Torres in Barcelona and CDR Studio in New York. She is a registered architect in New York State. She has worked on commercial, cultural and residential projects within Europe and the United States, developing a clear set of principles and approaches to deal with historic and modern architecture. Originally, Jeni Erbes-Chan specialized in restoring and transforming historic buildings. While this is far from the only type of work she takes on, the core philosophy has bled into how she approaches all her projects.
Our studio offer full service architecture solutions and work on projects ranging from renovations, new construction and interior design of residential projects, retail spaces to the design of objects and furniture. We advocate for a more natural and mindful approach to design and materiality. As a practice, we advocate for bio-based materials in construction to create healthier futures for everyone. It is better for the environment, better for biodiversity and better for our health.
Restoration requires a careful balance between respecting heritage and adding originality. Any successful restoration project must feel like a natural continuation of the building’s history, while still being clearly contemporary.
In her daily work, this makes her prioritize deep understanding of a project’s context. Where we are building, what was before, and who will inhabit the space will always form the foundation for her aesthetic ambitions as a studio. She always takes her time to be in close dialogue with residents, owners, or users and uses that knowledge to help her find the perfect balance between a functional and beautiful space.
In short, she creates spaces that stand out when looked upon, but shine when they become part of daily life. Her process is a collaborative design process, one that forges a partnership with clients, consultants and contractors. Each is a valued collaborator in shaping the program, determining the direction and defining the success of the project. She believes in designing architecture without rhetoric and values for the simplicity in the designs.
I always try to approach a new project with an open mind. Architecture is always a dialogue. With that said, I naturally have my preferences. Looking through my portfolio will make it clear that I gravitate towards minimalism and love natural materials.
For me, architecture is about eliminating excess and focusing on essential forms. It is about rigorous attention to details and carefully selecting the right materials. I want to create serene spaces that are soft and emotional, but also naturally affords human interaction.
